This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) will fund a postdoctoral research fellowship focused on inferring genetic admixture histories via mechanistic modeling in structured ancestral populations. The $240,000 award, effective September 1, 2024 through August 31, 2027, will support the fellow's research to develop a method for understanding the genealogical history of genetically admixed populations, with a focus on exploring the African ancestry of African-Americans. The project aims to directly address the underrepresentation of genetically admixed populations in population genetics research and provide a general method to explore the genealogical and genetic ancestries of diverse human and non-human populations. The research will also train the fellow in mathematical modeling and population-genetic methods development, while expanding their focus to include human population genetics. To broaden participation, the fellow will communicate the research to broad communities and participate in mentoring and outreach efforts to foster inclusive STEM environments.
