This National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) grant award of $240,000 supports a 3-year postdoctoral research fellowship to investigate the evolutionary origins and consequences of novel sensory capabilities in venomous vipers. The research aims to combine whole-genome analyses with high-resolution CT scans to quantify how venom and vision traits have evolved in coordination across molecular and anatomical scales in these snakes. The research will provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the emergence of new biological functions, as well as generate open-source software and public outreach materials, including a museum exhibit. The fellow will work with experts at the University of Michigan & Museum of Zoology to develop the skills needed to interpret the complex anatomical data from the CT scans. No sub-awards are planned for this grant.
