This $418,995 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program supports the continuation of the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) project, a global network of 20 telescopes operated by the University of Hawaii and Ohio State University. The ASAS-SN project aims to provide nightly monitoring of the entire visible sky to a magnitude of 18, enabling the discovery and observation of approximately 300 supernovae per year. This data serves as a crucial resource for the study of transient and variable astronomical events such as active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and cataclysmic variables. The award will fund the continued operation of the ASAS-SN network from August 2024 through July 2027, during which time the project is expected to discover nearly 3,300 supernovae and build a comprehensive database of over 600,000 classified variable stars. The project also serves as a training ground for the next generation of time-domain astronomers and plans to engage citizens in classifying detected objects through future citizen science initiatives.
