This $258,736 federal Project Grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Astronomical Sciences under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) federal grant program. The grant supports collaborative research by Rutgers, The State University to study nearby cosmic explosions, specifically supernovae, from their earliest moments. The research team will enhance its rapid survey capabilities to promptly identify and study new supernovae, incorporating new infrastructure to find even younger nearby supernovae. As part of this work, three graduate students will learn and contribute to supernova science and develop technical, data analysis, and scientific presentation skills. The team will also communicate research results and expertise to the public through outreach activities. Over the 3-year award period, the research is expected to yield the discovery of 30 very young nearby supernovae, including 12 thermonuclear Type Ia, 12 core collapse, and 6 stripped envelope supernovae. Early spectroscopic observations will probe the composition of the circumstellar medium and the final stages of the progenitor stars' lives. No federal grant sub-awards are planned for this project.
