This $383,771 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) supports research to develop novel techniques for offloading heterogeneous computational tasks to edge devices with diverse processing capabilities. The University of Massachusetts (UMass) will lead this collaborative research project to improve the energy efficiency, resiliency, and scalability of edge cloud computing. The key objectives are to create new methods for efficiently handling diverse workloads, such as CPU, GPU, and neural processing tasks, on dynamically reconfigurable FPGA-based edge devices. The research will focus on a drone network surveillance use case to demonstrate the proposed techniques. Additionally, the project will develop educational initiatives, including new course modules and a research workshop, to engage undergraduate and graduate students in heterogeneous edge computing. All findings, innovations, and software from this 4-year project will be openly shared to promote further collaboration and practical applications within the research community and industry.
