This National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program award (CFDA 47.070) is providing $148,347 from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2028 to the University of Maine System to develop a new framework for securing hardware intellectual property (IP) against reverse engineering and other attacks. The project aims to leverage artificial intelligence techniques like reinforcement learning and explainable AI to systematically discover novel attack vectors, identify root causes, and devise scalable design transformation rules to mitigate these threats. The research outcomes will be used to create new cybersecurity courses, engage undergraduate and high school students, and release open-source tools and datasets to benefit the broader research community. This work contributes to enhancing the security and trustworthiness of electronic hardware, which is critical for the semiconductor industry and national security.
