The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) a $111,313 Project Grant under the Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) federal grant program. This 3-year grant (October 2024 - September 2027) will establish a new Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program focused on cold climate engineering and science.
The REU program will provide 6 undergraduate students per year with a 10-week summer research internship at UAA, mentored by faculty from the College of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences. Students will conduct research in areas such as Arctic coastal risks, permafrost thawing, glacial environments, and the performance of materials in extreme environments. The project aims to train future scientists and engineers from underrepresented groups by engaging them in hands-on polar research. The research results are expected to improve understanding of the changing Arctic environment.
