This $237,804 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will support the University of New Mexico's research to study the magmatic plumbing system beneath Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica. The project will apply deep learning algorithms to analyze decades of seismic data in order to detect, locate, and characterize the full range of seismic activity at Mount Erebus. This comprehensive analysis is intended to better reveal the dynamics of the volcano's magmatic system and address key questions about seismicity patterns and their relationship to eruptive processes at the summit lava lake. The award period runs from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026 and will also provide research and training opportunities for an early career researcher and undergraduate student at UNM.
