This National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) Project Grant award provides $3,000,000 to the Georgia Institute of Technology to develop a new traineeship program in the sustainable development of smart medical devices. The overarching goal is to train the next generation of designers and engineers to prioritize sustainability and innovation for medical devices, addressing challenges related to environmental impact, material waste, and carbon emissions. The 5-year award, effective September 2024, will support a comprehensive training program for up to 100 master's and doctoral students, including 25 funded trainees. The program combines multidisciplinary coursework, collaborative partnerships with clinical experts and medical product accelerators, and hands-on research experiences to bridge the gap between sustainability, device technology, and medical science. As part of the grant, Georgia Tech has subcontracted with WestEd, a nonprofit research and evaluation agency, to conduct a formative and summative evaluation of the traineeship program.
