This National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Traineeship (NRT) Program grant award of $500,202, with a project period from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027, will enable a collaboration between Purdue University and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) to develop an innovative graduate program integrating environmental sustainability into business practices. The project aims to train 22 NRT-funded and approximately 70 additional Master's and doctoral students across disciplines including environmental, materials, civil, computer, mechanical, industrial, and architectural engineering. The training activities, guided by the Engineering for One Planet framework, will include an outcomes-based curriculum, doctoral dissertation research, industry internships, and instruction in communication, ethics, and teamwork. The research will focus on three pillars: greening the digital economy, decarbonizing steel and electricity, and sustainable transportation, with the goal of developing methods and tools to reduce environmental impacts and inform business decisions around environmental sustainability.
