The University of Mississippi has been awarded a $288,279 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) grant from the National Science Foundation's Integrative Activities (IA) program. This 5-year project will focus on developing a hybrid four-dimensional (4D) printing process that integrates high-resolution electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing and high-throughput extrusion printing. The goal is to fabricate flexible structures with shape-changing capability for potential applications in aerospace, healthcare, biology, and automotive industries. The project will advance scientific understanding of the complex interactions between materials and printing processes, optimize print parameters for shape-changing structures, and develop educational resources and outreach programs to inspire students, especially those from underrepresented groups, to pursue advanced manufacturing fields. This CAREER award reflects the university's significant expertise in engineering, materials science, and STEM education, as well as its capacity to execute complex, multidisciplinary research efforts supported by major federal funding.
