The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Environmental Biology awarded a $199,678 Project Grant to the University of California, Merced, a minority-serving and Hispanic-serving educational institution, under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074). The research project aims to quantify the response of oxic methane production to biogeochemical changes in aquatic ecosystems, using record Sierra Nevada snowmelt as a natural experiment. The researchers will determine the mechanisms and organisms that produce methane, and how they are affected by nutrients and carbon, through a combination of biogeochemical measurements and molecular biology techniques applied to samples collected from five high-elevation lakes in Yosemite National Park. The findings will improve understanding of the processes that drive methane production in surface waters and how they may change due to natural or human-caused variations in nutrient and carbon fluxes. The award period runs from August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024.
