The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Environmental Biology awarded a $799,458 Project Grant to the University of Florida (UF) for the 3-year period from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026. The grant is part of NSF's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) and will fund collaborative research to integrate plant traits, phylogenies, and distributional data to forecast the risks and resilience of North American plant communities in response to climate and land use changes. The project aims to develop a framework for understanding the eco-evolutionary dynamics that have shaped the diversity of North America's approximately 38,000 seed plant species. Key activities include assembling historical and current data on plant trait diversity and endemism, examining distributional trends for a comprehensive set of plant species, and using these insights to forecast changes in plant diversity to inform conservation prioritization. The large-scale, collaborative nature of this project has the potential to substantially advance scientific understanding of North American plant communities and the processes underlying their responses to global change.
