The National Science Foundation (NSF), through its Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083), awarded a $100,000 Project Grant to the University of New Mexico (UNM) to host a two-day conference titled "Improving the Research and Innovation Enterprise Across the Southwest Region". The conference aims to (1) enhance the collective understanding of challenges facing the research enterprise in the Southwest U.S., (2) formulate next steps for individual and collective action to overcome barriers, (3) engage more under-resourced institutions and researchers in authentic research endeavors, (4) grow regional capacity to develop, propose, and implement research and innovation that meets local and regional needs, and (5) strengthen the regional research development and administration career landscape. The target audience includes stakeholders from the Southwest region, with a focus on two-year, primarily undergraduate, minority-serving, and tribal institutions, as well as research administration and development staff. The conference will feature listening sessions and panel discussions on topics such as barriers to research capacity building, staffing the research enterprise, building successful research collaborations, and the innovation landscape in the Southwest.
