This $209,493 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will enable Syracuse University to acquire a triple quadrupole ICP-MS instrument to support research, teaching, and outreach activities at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The instrument will have a wide range of applications, including hydrogeology, paleoenvironmental studies, and solid earth processes. It will be integrated into the university's curriculum, providing educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, both in-person and online. The acquired instrument will also facilitate student-led undergraduate research and enable public outreach efforts, such as showcasing the instrument's capabilities to K-12 students. The data generated from the ICP-MS will be used to investigate changes in ocean oxygen patterns throughout Earth's history, which reflect important environmental changes in the atmosphere, on land, and during the evolution of life. The award is effective from August 1, 2024, through July 31, 2027, and no sub-awards are planned.
