This $336,623 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund the refurbishment and upgrade of an existing 21-year old Thermo Element 2 inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) instrument and the acquisition of a new laser ablation system at the University of Maryland, College Park. The ICPMS upgrade will include software replacement and modernization of some electronic and vacuum components to make the system compatible with current versions and serviceable. The laser ablation system will be added. These instrumentation upgrades will allow the Plasma Laboratory in the Department of Geology to continue its 21-year record of supporting NSF-sponsored geosciences research and providing hands-on training to students. Specifically, the upgraded facilities will be critical for analyzing samples to advance understanding of processes related to Earth's composition and evolution, mantle dynamics, and volatile cycling on terrestrial planets. The award period is from July 15, 2022 through December 31, 2023.
