This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.070) program will support research by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) to develop a sustainable vertiport system and autonomous drone swarm for methane emission monitoring over orphaned oil and gas wells. The $149,999 grant will fund three technical objectives: (1) a low-cost, portable, and sustainable vertiport to enable precision landing and housing of multiple drones; (2) a federated deep reinforcement learning algorithm for safe drone swarm landing and takeoff; and (3) 3D drone swarm path planning for efficient methane plume localization and quantification. The project will also examine social science aspects, including assessing potential improvements in federal funding allocation for orphaned well cleanup and incentivizing operator adoption of the cost-effective monitoring system. The research aims to revolutionize measurement and monitoring technologies, enabling the oil and gas industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while providing insights applicable to broader domains like wireless edge computing and autonomous drone defense.
