The University of Hawaii (UH) received a $472,954 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) on August 15, 2023. This award supports upgrades to UH's networking capacity and infrastructure to improve research data transfer throughput and performance at key research locations across the state of Hawaii.
Specifically, the project enables 100 Gbps connectivity upgrades at three locations - the Institute for Astronomy, the Pacific Biosciences Research Center Kewalo Marine Lab, and the Physics Building on the UH Manoa campus. This high-speed networking supports large data transfers between research sites and UH's Mana High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, as well as real-time data streaming from the telescopes on Haleakala Mountain. The project also includes router-based upgrades to the SciDMZ to facilitate high-throughput data exchange between the Mana HPC and global research and education networks. These networking enhancements empower UH researchers across disciplines including physics, astronomy, and biosciences to leverage the robust and high-bandwidth network infrastructure.
