This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award of $250,000 to Stetson University, Inc. will establish a pilot green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) bioswale and associated hydrologic monitoring system at Veterans Memorial Park in the City of Cape Canaveral, Florida. The project aims to objectively test the field performance of GSI interventions for mitigating stormwater-based flooding and non-point nutrient load issues in the Indian River Lagoon watershed, a highly impaired estuary ecosystem. Performance data from this pilot will guide the design, implementation, and monitoring protocols for subsequent GSI projects in Cape Canaveral and other coastal communities in the region. This award supports the city's efforts to adopt GSI as a primary strategy for climate adaptation and water quality mitigation, which has been hindered by a lack of monitoring data, ambiguous permitting standards, and misunderstood maintenance requirements.
