The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $647,968 Project Grant to the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083). The grant will fund the acquisition of a Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS), a versatile instrument to measure electrical, magnetic, thermal, and thermodynamic properties of materials over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. This advanced characterization tool will support interdisciplinary research and education on next-generation materials, including studies on superconductors, quantum materials, thermoelectrics, energy storage, superhard materials, and semiconductor devices. The PPMS system will be integrated into UIC's Research Resources Center, a shared-use facility accessible to both internal and external researchers and collaborators. The project aims to advance fundamental physics, chemistry, and materials science through experimental work guided by theoretical modeling, as well as provide hands-on training opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows.
