This National Science Foundation award for $383,674 provides funding to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) through the Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program to acquire a laser ablation time-of-flight inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-TOF-ICP-MS) system. This advanced analytical instrument will facilitate research and teaching across 14 UCSB faculty members and their students, as well as enable access for a broad range of researchers and students in California and globally. The LA-TOF-ICP-MS system enables rapid, high-resolution 3D elemental and isotopic imaging of geological and biological materials, supporting objectives such as dating complex minerals, characterizing uranium distribution in carbonates, and retrieving paleoclimate proxy records. This award reflects NSF's mission to enhance the competitiveness of U.S. research and development through activities that build scientific and engineering capacity and broaden participation.
