The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $1,938,193 Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) grant under the Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) program to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The grant supports the acquisition of a novel "Tribeam" microscope that can rapidly generate high-resolution 3D data on a broad range of materials including polymers, composites, ceramics, metals, semiconductors, electrochemical and biological materials. The 3D data from this instrument will enable new insights on the structure and function of advanced materials, enabling their use in applications like battery electrodes, additive manufacturing, wear-resistant coatings, and high-power semiconductor devices. To broaden access, UCSB will form a "3DMESH" hub to provide Tribeam training and share the 3D datasets and analysis protocols. No sub-awards are planned under this grant, which is set to run from August 2023 through July 2026.
