The National Science Foundation awarded $318,188 under the Engineering (47.041) federal grant program to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a project titled "CAREER: GEOSPATIAL LIFE CYCLE CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS OF SOLAR AND OCEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS." The award period is from October 1, 2022 through July 31, 2026.

The project will develop geospatial life cycle assessment modeling methods to more precisely determine the climate change impacts of conventional and renewable energy systems at higher spatial resolutions. This will be done by integrating direct land use change impacts, albedo change as a non-greenhouse gas climate forcer, and geospatial data relevant to potential electricity generation into existing life cycle assessment practices. Parametric life cycle assessment models of solar, ocean renewable, and fossil fuel energy scenarios will be created in open-source Python code using public geospatial datasets and the physics of the technologies. The methodology and results will be disseminated to stakeholders to inform sustainable location-specific design and implementation decisions for energy transitions.
