The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded a $380,718 project grant to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to study the drivers and impacts of saltwater intrusion along Arctic coastlines. The 3-year grant, awarded on April 1, 2024, will support an interdisciplinary field and laboratory study along the Beaufort Sea coast of Alaska. The key objectives are to: 1) characterize subsurface temperature, water level, thaw depth, and porewater salinity dynamics, 2) measure porewater nutrient concentrations and greenhouse gas fluxes, and 3) assess links between water table dynamics, groundwater nutrient levels, and greenhouse gas fluxes across healthy and salinized tundra sites. This research will provide baseline understanding of the physical, biological, and chemical processes occurring along rapidly changing Arctic coastlines, and findings will be shared with the scientific community as well as local schools and the public. The project will also fund the training of summer interns, a research assistant, and a field technician, and support two early career female researchers.
