This $354,138 three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070) supports Colorado State University's development of an animal-borne adaptive acoustic environmental monitoring system. Colorado State University's Sponsored Programs division will utilize the funding to create a wearable acoustic monitoring device and associated machine learning tools to allow wildlife to serve as mobile sensors. This will enable long-term, real-time observation of entire ecosystems from an animal's perspective. By combining acoustic monitoring with existing animal tracking technologies, researchers can gain new insights into biodiversity loss, species protection efforts, and the impacts of human activities. All data, designs, and software from the project will be made publicly available to support further research and technology integration by others.
