This three-year, $491,708 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program will support the development of hybrid bonding polymers at Northwestern University. Researchers will integrate traditional covalent polymers with supramolecular polymers using small molecules as co-crystallized domains. This is intended to generate functional structures combining the mechanical benefits of polymer backbones and crystalline lattices at sites connected by covalent and noncovalent bonds. Specific systems to be investigated include crystallizable chromophores for applications such as photocatalysis, ferroelectricity, and supramolecular chirality. The grant will also provide cross-disciplinary training to undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students, including those from underrepresented groups, in polymer chemistry, materials science, and organic synthesis research.
