This National Science Foundation project grant award of $240,000 provides funding from January 1, 2024 through December 31, 2026 to investigate the genetic and ecological factors influencing parasite resistance in monarch butterflies. The award is made under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to promote progress in the biological sciences. Specifically, the grantee will conduct research at the University of Nevada, Reno to elucidate the direct and indirect pathways through which host genes and diets contribute to disease resistance in monarch butterflies. The grantee will determine the genetic basis of resistance, experimentally evaluate how host genotype and dietary chemistry indirectly influence resistance via gut microbiota, and investigate the mechanistic basis of resistance. Additionally, the grantee will provide immersive research experiences for undergraduates and develop K-6 science lessons on the connection between diet and disease. This research aims to further understanding of disease susceptibility with applications to agriculture, conservation, and human and wildlife health.
