Arizona State University was awarded a three-year $198,705 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049). The grant will support collaborative research between ASU, the University of Delaware, Arizona State University, and Washington University in St. Louis to investigate how the presence of halides influences the crystal structure formation of certain classes of metal and lanthanide chalcogenide nanocrystals. The researchers will employ experimental techniques including in situ methods and computational modeling to examine the thermodynamics, kinetics, and atomic interactions that determine the crystal polymorphism. Insights gained will provide guidance for controlling crystal phase outcomes during nanocrystal synthesis. The project aims to advance understanding of manganese and lanthanide chalcogenide nanocrystals while training students and undergraduate researchers through hands-on experiences. Results could enable rational design of nanomaterials with tailored optical, magnetic, and other properties for applications in photovoltaics, catalysis, and energy storage.
