Colorado State University Sponsored Programs Division was awarded a three-year $406,500 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program to develop chemical tools to investigate phosphatidylinositol mannosides (PIMs) in the Corynebacterineae suborder of bacteria. Under the award beginning July 1, 2023, Professors Benjamin Swarts of Central Michigan University and Mary Jackson of Colorado State University will synthesize carbohydrate-based probes exploiting native and engineered metabolic pathways to introduce chemical tags into PIMs, lipomannan, and lipoarabinomannan in live bacterial cells. Fluorescently labeled glycolipids will be tested in whole cells to potentially track the molecules and identify proteins responsible for transport across membranes. Findings are expected to improve understanding of glycolipid biosynthesis, dynamics, and corynebacterial physiology. The award supports undergraduate and graduate student and postdoctoral training in organic synthesis, chemical biology, and microbiology at the two institutions.
