This is a $1,038,533 project grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) to Savannah State University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Georgia. The project aims to quantify and characterize the distribution of micro- and nano-plastics in water, sediment, and biota within the Georgia Bight region. It will utilize drifters, water-tracking technology, and various analytical techniques like Raman spectroscopy and pyrolysis-GC-MS. The project also includes student mentorship and training in microplastics research methods. Key outcomes include establishing the temporal and spatial variability of microplastics, examining estuarine fauna for plastic contamination, and developing a cost-effective shallow-water estuary profiling system for improved sample collection and in-situ analysis. This project is part of NSF's efforts to enhance the nation's research competitiveness, build STEM capacity, and broaden participation of underrepresented groups. The project leverages partnerships between Savannah State University, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, University of Georgia Skidaway Institute, and Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
