The California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) received a two-year, $210,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop and test a co-curricular simulation-based approach to chemistry education for undergraduate engineering students. CSULA's corporate affiliate, CAL State La University Auxiliary Services Inc. (UAS), will provide project management and administrative services to support implementation of the Simulation-based Pedagogical Approach in Chemistry Education (SPACE) project. Over three iterations, the SPACE project aims to use computational modeling simulations and evidence-based learning strategies to improve undergraduate engineering students' fundamental understanding of chemical reactions and ability to solve advanced science problems when taking prerequisite chemistry courses at CSULA, as well as increase their motivation and identity within science fields. The project will assess participating students before, during, and after the course using instruments measuring chemistry knowledge, problem-solving skills, science motivation, and identity. Evaluation results will examine the project's potential for adaptation and replication across institutional chemistry education programs.
