Bridgewater State University received a $348,850 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop new catalytic systems for carbon dioxide capture and reduction. The university will isolate a photosynthetic protein from algae and attach it to transition metal catalyst complexes to create hybrid systems for converting carbon dioxide into useful reduction products like formic acid, methanol or methane using light as an energy source. Undergraduate students will gain research experience developing and testing these protein-catalyst hybrids. Outreach activities will educate local high school students on green chemistry, alternative energy and climate change. The three-year award beginning September 1, 2023 supports the university's work advancing solutions for sustainably reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide, in line with the NSF program's goals of strengthening the nation's scientific enterprise in mathematical and physical sciences.
