The Michigan State University was awarded an $870,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Computer and Network Systems under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.070) to develop techniques and a testing platform for safeguarding next-generation emergency services over cellular networks. Over a three-year period from July 2023 to June 2026, the University will conduct three research thrusts. The first will develop a multi-level emergency service verifier using model-checking techniques to examine cellular emergency service specifications for design flaws. The second will analyze implementation issues and potential operational risks through a software-defined radio next-generation 911 service platform and testing dataset. The third will build an automated testing platform to identify and re-examine discovered vulnerabilities to ensure sustainable security. The award supports the development of innovative emergency service modeling, vulnerability analysis, and automated testing solutions to extend emergency service security research capabilities.
