This National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Activities program grant of $189,997 awarded to Iowa State University of Science and Technology will develop a data-driven, physics-informed early warning system to predict flood occurrence and support communities in agriculture-dominated watersheds across the Midwestern U.S. The project will integrate complex watershed characteristics, human land use, and management practices into hydrological modeling to improve flood forecasting accuracy and provide an interpretable flood prediction system. The results will be deployed as a real-time prediction tool on a web-based platform accessible to underrepresented communities facing the direct and indirect impacts of flooding on life, property, food security, economy, and livelihood. This cross-disciplinary effort is jointly funded by the NSF Hydrologic Sciences, EPSCoR, and Directorate for Geosciences programs to advance AI/ML capabilities in the geosciences.
