This $414,390 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at Eastern Michigan University to advance understanding of autophagy, a cellular recycling and protection process. Funded under the NSF Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), the three-year award beginning in February 2023 will investigate the molecular mechanisms that drive formation of the autophagosome, a vesicle that degrades cellular cargo. Researchers will study proteins involved in conjugating the ATG8 protein to membranes, which defines the autophagic vesicle, as well as the role of ATG11 in organizing vesicle formation. An improved model for analyzing vesicle size and number from microscopy images will also be developed. In addition to advancing basic scientific knowledge with potential implications for agriculture, animal and human health, the project provides research experiences for 12 undergraduates, two master's students and approximately 24 additional undergraduates, supporting workforce development in science and technology fields.
