This two-year, $233,568 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program aims to advance distributed information processing, simulation, and inference techniques. Florida International University will develop novel approaches for characterizing the fundamental memory structure of distributed functions using dependency spectrums. Researchers will also derive new laws of small numbers describing the interplay between dependency spectrums and distributed cooperation. They will uncover performance trade-offs between correlation-preserving abilities necessary for cooperation and efficient individual task processing. The grant additionally supports applying these concepts to distributed data compression techniques, information transmission in interference networks, and fundamental and practical limits of distributed randomness generation. The award seeks to further the program's goals of supporting investigator-initiated computing and communications research and developing cyberinfrastructure to accelerate discovery and innovation.
