This $250,000 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at Florida International University to develop artificial intelligence techniques for radio frequency machine learning and spectrum situational awareness. Led by FIU, the research team will create lifelong incremental learning approaches to spectrum management and dynamic spectrum access enabled by advanced hardware innovations. The team aims to improve spectrum utilization and coexistence of competing users through a real-time understanding of waveform shapes, spectral content, and modulation schemes in sub-6 GHz bands. Specific techniques to be explored include deep learning for processing wideband multi-directional RF signals carrying diverse waveforms and protocols. The research is expected to improve spectrum sensing performance by at least 100 times compared to software-based systems. The award furthers the NSF's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) by fostering innovation in engineering research focused on improving spectrum access and resilience through AI-based spectrum sensing with lifelong learning.
