- This two-year, $389,704 National Science Foundation project grant will support the development of a reference model describing the shear-wave velocity structure of oceanic crust and upper mantle for crustal ages of 0 to 9 million years. Funded through NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will leverage 2012 ocean bottom seismometer data collected across the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate to constrain shear-wave velocities through advanced seismic modeling and...
- The University of Washington was awarded a $271,960 two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050). The grant will support collaborative research to study constraints on interseismic locking near the trench on the Oregon segment of the Cascadia Subduction Zone using seafloor geodesy (GNSS-A). As the awardee, the University of Washington will leverage its expertise in ocean sciences and geosciences...
- This Project Grant award for $398,707 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research project between the University of Oregon and other institutions to study the geologic history and tectonic evolution of the Pacific Northwest region. The project aims to test models for the surface response to the Eocene collision of the Siletz oceanic terrane with western North America, as well as the subsequent post-collision adjustments that shaped...
- This two-year Project Grant award of $401,300 from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences supports collaborative research on constraints of interseismic locking near the trench on the Oregon segment of the Cascadia Subduction Zone using seafloor geodesy. The research will be conducted through the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego under the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). This program supports basic research in the...
- This $174,000 two-year project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences aims to advance understanding of episodic tremor and slip in subduction zones. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research to strengthen knowledge of the integrated Earth system, this award will fund research into the role of metasomatic alteration in subduction zone seismic phenomena from September 2021 through August 2023. The grantee, located in Seattle,...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a two-year, $174,000 Project Grant to researchers at Riverside, California under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The grant will support work using distributed acoustic sensing to detect tremors and characterize earthquake hazard sites in the Cascadia region. Through June 2022 to May 2024, the grantees will evaluate earthquake risks by deploying fiber optic cables to monitor seismic activity. Insights gained from this work will further the...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of Oregon received a $282,492 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), effective September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2028. This collaborative research initiative aims to improve ground motion prediction for earthquake hazards in the Pacific Northwest by developing methods to characterize shallow shear-wave velocity structure in sedimentary basins. The...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $261,123 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Oregon (UO) to conduct a comprehensive study of the Cascadia subduction zone, focusing on seismic and tsunami activity around the year 1700 CE. The key objectives are to: Map high-resolution paleotsunami deposits at two key locations along the Cascadia subduction zone, and Execute thousands of advanced tsunami inundation models to test hypotheses about...
This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050), provides $479,989 to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to analyze marine seismic data along the Cascadia subduction zone offshore Vancouver Island to southern Oregon. The award aims to constrain variability in subducting sediment thickness, water content of the downgoing plate, and topography of the sediment-basement interface from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024. Specifically, the awardee will produce P-wave and S-wave seismic velocity structure models along seismic transects using wide-angle seismic data processing and imaging methods. These seismic velocity models and effective medium theory will be used to determine porosity and fluid/chemically-bound water distribution in the incoming and subducting plates. Findings from this research investigating Cascadia subduction zone processes will be of interest to scientists and also contribute to updating the U.S. Geological Survey's 3-D seismic velocity model for the region.
