This $599,992 National Science Foundation project grant supports the creation of autonomy-supportive learning environments in undergraduate STEM courses through the Student Pedagogy Advocate (SPA) program at Purdue University. Funded under the NSF's Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) program, the three-year award beginning May 1, 2023 will pair undergraduate students as SPAs with faculty teaching large introductory STEM courses. The SPAs will observe classes, provide feedback to faculty on creating autonomy-supportive learning environments, and help implement evidence-based teaching practices focused on satisfying students' basic psychological needs. A $24,992 subaward to Bryn Mawr College will support collaboration on this work. The project aims to advance understanding of effective implementation of student-centered, autonomy-supportive pedagogies in STEM by investigating conditions under which the SPA model fosters satisfaction of instructors', SPAs', and students' basic psychological needs. Findings could help improve STEM education nationwide under the NSF's mission of supporting the STEM enterprise.
