Alberto Perez of the University of Florida was awarded a $650,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop new computational methods for characterizing nucleic acid structure, recognition mechanisms, and function. Over a five-year period ending in November 2027, Dr. Perez and his research group will pursue the development of enhanced sampling methods and Bayesian inference strategies to better model the three-dimensional conformations adopted by DNA, RNA, and their complexes with proteins. The new computational tools are designed to connect nucleic acid structures with their functional roles to help decipher mechanisms of action. The tools will be freely available to the scientific community. Additionally, Dr. Perez will train new scientists through virtual reality activities that simulate molecular modeling. If successful, the new methods could help rationalize protein-nucleic acid recognition mechanisms and advance chemical biology and biotechnology.
