This $745,652 National Science Foundation project grant supports research into atmospheric boundary layers in extreme Alaskan winter conditions from December 2022 through November 2025. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), the University of Alaska Fairbanks will investigate boundary layer dynamics and turbulence regimes in cold, dark atmospheres. Researchers will conduct intensive field experiments using surface instruments, remote sensing, and unmanned aircraft to document radiation, turbulence, composition and dynamics. Observations will be combined with mesoscale and microscale modeling to advance understanding of physical processes in radiatively-driven boundary layers. Insights aim to improve air pollution forecasting, meteorological predictions, and regional climate modeling in polar regions during winter. The project focuses on boundary layer states under strong surface cooling, inhomogeneity, composition changes and transient thermodynamic conditions not fully captured in models. It seeks to connect pollution sources to receptors and validate model representation of extreme boundary layer processes.
