This $707,741 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research into dynamical mechanisms for midlatitude-arctic interactions and associated weather extremes in a warming climate. The University of California, Los Angeles will examine several interrelated dynamical mechanisms through three tasks from April 15, 2023 to March 31, 2026. The researchers will analyze linkages between stratospheric planetary waves and cold weather risks, examine how a weaker jet stream affects weather extremes, and study atmospheric rivers and moisture transport into the Arctic. The funding will also support training of graduate students and undergraduates including underrepresented minorities. Idealized climate models developed through this research will be made publicly available online.
