Project Grant 2230350
- This three-year, $424,310 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078), will support research on recent changes in Arctic biogenic sulfur aerosols through analysis of a central Greenland ice core. South Dakota State University, as awardee, will collaborate with the University of St. Andrews in the United Kingdom to measure sulfate isotopes in shallow ice cores and archived ice samples dating back to...
- This $254,639 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078), will fund research to advance paleoclimate reconstruction techniques using thin or disturbed ice core sections. The University of Washington will develop new instrumentation and data workflows at the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility to investigate sub-centimeter chemical and physical variations in polar ice cores. Researchers will...
- This $1.5 million National Science Foundation project grant supports research into secondary marine aerosol precursors and their links to aerosol growth during Arctic sea ice melt onset. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), the goal is to advance understanding of secondary marine aerosol formation in the atmosphere and its impact on cloud properties and climate. Colorado State University will conduct measurements of volatile organic compounds and reduced sulfur compounds aboard...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of Washington received a $462,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2028. This collaborative research project delivers scientific research products focused on reconstructing historical Arctic sea-ice coverage and associated biogeochemical conditions over the past 150,000 years. The research team will analyze ocean sediment cores using...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), provides $486,913 to the University of Washington for collaborative research investigating glacial-interglacial variability in tropospheric reactive halogens. Specifically, the research will examine how blowing snow on sea ice can explain increases in sodium ions observed in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores over glacial-interglacial timescales. It...
- This three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Polar Programs ($489,233) supports research into the last deglaciation period in Greenland. Oregon State University is the primary awardee and will work with sub-awardee University of Washington to strengthen understanding of this "mystery interval" through basic scientific exploration best conducted in polar regions, as outlined in the NSF's CFDA #47.078 program. Specifically, the awardees will conduct...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded Colorado State University a $673,107 Project Grant under the Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) federal grant program. The grant will support improved understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions during the Arctic sea ice melt period from May to June 2023. As part of the Swedish-led ARTOFMELT expedition aboard the icebreaker Oden in the Arctic Ocean, the university will conduct observations and modeling to characterize aerosol...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) provides $161,000.00 to the University of Washington to conduct collaborative research assessing the causal influence of atmospheric opacity (i.e., clouds) and sea ice on Arctic warming over the period 1980 to 2060. The research will leverage a well-established NSF-funded Earth System Model and observations, including data from the recent MOSAIC field campaign, to quantify how these factors...
- This $194,921 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will fund collaborative research to constrain and understand regional modes of variability in the Atlantic Arctic over the next two years. The overarching goal is to quantitatively study climate patterns and their long-term changes in the Atlantic Arctic and sub-Arctic regions using a variety of data sources, including meteorological measurements, historical observations, and climate...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will support research on the impacts of dust deposition on the Arctic cryosphere, with a focus on the Svalbard region. The $417,518 grant, awarded on March 15, 2025, aims to determine the spatial and temporal variability of dust deposition onto Svalbard glaciers, identify dust sources, assess the contribution of dust and black carbon to snow and glacier melt, and investigate recent trends in dust...
This three-year, $627,411 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078), will support research on recent changes in Arctic biogenic sulfur aerosols through analysis of a central Greenland ice core. The University of Washington, as prime awardee, will collaborate with the University of St. Andrews to measure the concentrations and sulfur isotope compositions of methane sulfonic acid and sulfate in Greenland snow and ice cores accumulated over the last 30 years and earlier. This will help distinguish ocean biological and other sources of these sulfur compounds and investigate how their seasonal patterns may have changed with Arctic climate change and declining anthropogenic emissions. Two graduate students will receive training in ice core processing, chemical analysis, global modeling, and international collaboration. Outreach activities are planned to engage students. Results will advance understanding of climate feedbacks from biogenic sulfur aerosols in the Arctic and future projections.
