This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Office of Integrative Activities, under the Integrative Activities federal grant program (CFDA 47.083), provides $139,022 to Plymouth State University from January 15, 2023 through December 31, 2024. The funding will support research to reconstruct past climate records in New England from 13,000 years ago when a large ice sheet was retreating, through analysis of organic molecules in lake sediments. The research aims to elucidate the role of local climate in melting and retreat of large ice sheets by comparing the new climate records to existing records of ice sheet margin activity. It will also support capacity building at Plymouth State University and research experience for undergraduate students. The sub-awardee, University of Colorado Boulder, will collaborate through visits to conduct laboratory work to generate new high-resolution temperature and hydroclimate records using sediment cores. Findings seek to improve understanding of how terrestrial climate change impacts ice sheet fluctuations and inform projections of ice sheet contributions to sea level rise.
