The University of Notre Dame du Lac was awarded a $483,188 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program to develop meta-learning methods for controlling complex cyber-physical systems found in Internet of Things-enabled manufacturing environments. Over a three-year period ending in May 2026, the University will create algorithms and software implementations of a meta-learning approach using behaviorally ordered abstraction models to configure controller synthesis across different control tasks. This is intended to improve sample efficiency, interpretability, and robust stability over other deep learning methods for adaptive control of manufacturing systems with physical and cyber components that interact in unpredictable ways. The University will evaluate the "learning how to control" framework on a multi-robotic testbed mimicking WiFi-connected robots moving materials across a factory floor, and investigate transferring the models and policies to actual IoT-enabled manufacturing facilities.
