- This $933,796 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), funds the development of paper-based biosensor test strips to detect soil contaminants such as arsenic and PFAS. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will engage citizen scientists and use bacteria as sensors to produce quantitative readings of contaminant concentrations in soil. Two types of bacteria - E. coli functioning as the...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Integrative Organismal Systems awarded $600,000 to the University of Nebraska through the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) for a three-year project grant running from September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2028. The research focuses on identifying the genetic basis of developmentally regulated heat stress response in rice, with particular emphasis on how transient heat exposure during grain development affects grain...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $399,984 to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UW-River Falls) seeks to study the cycling and transport of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in agricultural soils. The two-year project, titled "EMBRACE-EAR-GROWTH: Coupling In-Situ Probing and Modeling Moisture-Related Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling and Transport", aims to: Decipher redox-related soil C and N cycling, mobilization,...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the United States Department of Agriculture awarded a $609,290 Project Grant to the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA 10.310). The four-year project will study the long-term, multigenerational impact of two agriculturally relevant metal oxide nanoparticles—zinc oxide and copper oxide nanoparticles and their transformed products—on...
This $250,000 National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs project grant will fund research to improve rice cultivation practices and reduce arsenic uptake in rice crops. The goal is to develop a mechanistic understanding of environmental factors controlling arsenic solubility and speciation in rice paddy soils. A multidisciplinary team from Columbia University, Union College, and San Diego State University will fuse frequent soil geochemistry, mineralogy, microbiology and hydrology measurements with remote sensing data. Novel machine learning and probabilistic models will scale field observations to predict spatial and temporal distributions of redox processes, aqueous arsenic, and rice-arsenic levels. The research will test hypotheses about external controls, steep near-surface gradients, and the ability of remotely sensed data to scale field observations when integrated with process-based models. Field sites in Cambodia and Texas will be extensively characterized. Findings aim to identify cultivation practices minimizing arsenic uptake in rice, benefiting farming communities and the global rice supply under the Polar Programs CFDA 47.078 program supporting basic research best conducted in polar regions or requiring such an environment.
