This $776,963 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078), will fund collaborative research analyzing marine sediment cores from around Antarctica. Led by three early-career women principal investigators at the University of Virginia, the project team will leverage archived sediment cores housed at Oregon State University to examine physical, biological, and geochemical properties indicating past and present glacial and oceanographic processes. They will compare sediment characteristics reflecting 20th-21st century instrumental observations to those deposited hundreds to thousands of years ago to contextualize modern changes. The team will integrate multi-proxy analyses of sediment flux, meltwater drainage, ice-rafted debris deposition, and radiocarbon chronologies from regions offshore of rapidly-changing and stable glacial systems. Educational outreach and best practices for sediment core data will be developed in collaboration with external partners. The four-year award period runs from February 1, 2023 to January 31, 2027.
