This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Computing and Communication Foundations, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), provides $321,347 to Northwestern University to develop approaches combining crowd-reported and machine-generated data with program analysis to automate the reproduction of kernel vulnerabilities. Specifically, the university will create inference methods to determine kernel compilation configurations from bug reports, construct triggering contexts via fault manipulation and injection, and design fuzzing tools to test bugs across kernel versions and identify non-vulnerable releases. By improving the reproducibility of crowdsourced and automated vulnerability reports, this research aims to advance computer security analysis of kernels and software engineering practices for bug diagnosis. The two-year award period runs from November 2021 to September 2023.
