This three-year, $245,465 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) will fund collaborative research to develop high-throughput methods for optimizing carbon steel microstructure to enhance corrosion resistance in concrete. The awardee, Georgia Tech Research Corporation, will work with partners to synthesize steel sample libraries with varying microstructures, characterize corrosion performance through high-throughput testing, develop machine learning models linking microstructure and corrosion, and design steels with optimized microstructures. Corrosion of reinforcing steel significantly impacts infrastructure costs and sustainability. This research aims to further the fundamental understanding of microstructure-corrosion relationships in steel and concrete environments to enable cost-effective design of more durable materials without changes to steel chemistry. Outcomes will support the Engineering program's goals of advancing innovation to strengthen the economy and improve lives.
