This Project Grant award of $438,690 from the National Science Foundation's Engineering (CFDA 47.041) program supports fundamental research at Northwestern University related to the development of advanced steelmaking processes using hydrogen reduction of oxide blends. The key objectives are to enable a drastic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from steel production and improve the modernization and competitiveness of the U.S. steel industry. The research investigates the thermodynamics and kinetics of the hydrogen reduction process through in-situ X-ray diffraction and theoretical modeling, with the goal of producing high-value alloyed steels in a single step. This project advances the understanding of co-reduction of oxide mixtures to achieve metallic ferroalloys, and supports the development of a domestic hydrogen economy and industrial decarbonization. The award term runs from November 1, 2023 to October 31, 2026.
